Mac users:  When using Finale and Sibelius and other music software, you will sometimes want to access the Library folder as it is the location where files are stored related to all of the applications on your Mac.  For example in Sibelius, if you want to install plug-ins or delete Manuscript paper, you have to navigate to this folder. In Finale, you may want to add or delete Worksheet files from the Libraries folder.

Where’s the Library Folder?

The path listed in the in the Sibelius 7 Reference manual to delete Manuscript Paper is:
Mac OS X: /Users/username/Library/Application Support/Avid/Sibelius 7

And the Finale 2012 manual lists the location of the Worksheets as:
Finale’s worksheets are available in the HD/Library/Application Support/MakeMusic/Finale 2012/Music Files/Worksheets & Repertoire/Worksheets folder.

However, if you are using Lion or Mountain Lion OS on your Mac,

you won’t find the Library folder anywhere! Here is the problem: Lion and Mountain Lion OS by default hides the Library folder from view.

Steps to Make the Library Permanently Visible

Apple hides the Library folder by setting a file system flag associated with the folder. Any folder on your Mac can have its visibility flag turned on or off; Apple just chose to set the Library folder’s visibility flag to the off state in Lion and Mountain Lion. To reset the visibility flag, do the following:

  1. Go to Applications > Utilities or from the Finder choose Go > Utilities
  2. Launch the Terminal application
  3. Enter the following command at the Terminal prompt:
    chflags nohidden ~/Library

Then, the path in the Sibelius 7 Reference manual and the Finale user manual will work fine:
Mac OS X: /Users/username/Library/Application Support/Avid/Sibelius 7
Finale’s worksheets are available in the HD/Library/Application Support/MakeMusic/Finale 2012/Music Files/Worksheets & Repertoire/Worksheets folder.

The other option is to make a trip to the Apple Genius Bar in your area and ask the Apple Rep to make the change for you. smiley
